From the Archives

September 04, 2015

[Saint Clement’s rich history and long-standing devotion to Anglo-Catholic traditions is often reflected in general news articles, as well as in the collection of parish newsletters and magazines, that date back to the 1870s, all found in the church archives.  In the time of the Cowley Fathers, priests sent to shepherd St. Clement’s by the Society of St. John the Evangelist, based at Cowley in England (1876 – 1892), the controversies regarding our church’s ritualistic liturgical practices were still raging in the Diocese.  Yet…  Read More >>

From the Archives:  A comment on the ‘Collect’

August 06, 2015

by Fr. Franklin Joiner,
Rector 1920 – 1955

Several people lately have asked me why some of our prayers are called Collects? It is an odd name for a prayer until we study its history. The Christians at Rome, when they united to offer the Eucharistic Sacrifice, used to gather at one church which they called the ecclesia collecta, the church of assembly. When all the people had gathered in this…  Read More >>

Renovation and Repair Work at St. Clement’s

August 06, 2015

The Vestry, working at the recommendations of the Property Committee, has initiated a number of long-overdue repair and renovation projects in the past several months.  Leaking problems in the Rectory that have caused continuing wall and roof damage in the third floor have at long last been staunched, thanks to a re-building of internalized downspouts and scuppers.  Exhaust systems in the Rectory and the high altar Sacristy have been installed to solve various problems of long-standing in those areas, and badly deteriorating Rectory windows…  Read More >>

The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom then shall I fear? …  Read More >>
